Finally Fall Book Tag!

I love Fall, and Spring. They both have temperatures, just right, and nature is quite beautiful. Since we are coming into Fall, I thought it was the perfect time to do the Finally Fall Book Tag. This tag was created by YouTuber Tall Tales last year, and I’m excited to be participating in the tag this year.

1. In fall, the air is crisp and clear: name a book with a vivid setting!Cover - Under Different Stars
I just recently finished the audiobook of this, and absolutely fell in love with this book.Kricket is just a normal Earthling, or so she thinks. She is actually from Ethar. After being dragged from her home in Chicago, where she’s been hiding from DDS, she finds herself in a war between the houses of Ethar as they fight to control or own her. They believe she is prophesied to save them, but one of the 5 houses will fall.

2. Nature is beautiful… but also dying: name a book that is beautifully written, but also deals with a heavy topic like loss or grief.Cover - My Sister's Grave by Robert Dugoni
This whole book is almost nothing but grief and ache.Tracy Crosswhite is torn over her sister’s disappearance over a decade ago. Now an adult, she is a detective helping solve others mysteries. Then her sister’s body is discovered. Now old wounds are open and she reopens her sister’s case to find who took her and what happened.

3. Fall is back to school season: share a non-fiction book that taught you something new.
I haven’t read a lot of non-fiction, but I’m going with:
Cover - How to be a Bawse by Lilly Singh
I loved how Lilly relates life to things we can all relate to like video games, and thrift stores. This helps the tips she has to share stick, and helps the concepts to click.

4. In order to keep warm, it’s good to spend some time with the people we love: name a fictional family/household/friend-group that you’d like to be a part of.

This may seem out there, but I’m going to say the Pack from the Women of the Underworld series by Kelley Armstrong. The answer to this question will also vary depending on when you ask me and what mood I am in. Currently I’m in a mood wanting to be able to change and get away and just run free…like they kind of do when members of the Pack changes to their wolf form.I could also say the Hawke family from the League series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. This family, both “blood” and the friends so close they are all brothers and sisters, is a family I would love to be a part of most any day. Except they are hunted by the League because they want to change their universe for the better. However, they can seriously kick butt, and if you mess with one, you mess with them all.

5. The colourful leaves are piling up on the ground: show us a pile of fall-colored spines!
Well…my physical book collection doesn’t have much for fall-ish spines, so I’m going to go to be ebook collection and say fall-colored covers. Here is a little collage I made with covers from my ebooks and audiobooks.
Book cover Fall colors Collage
In this collage are the covers of:

  • The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
  • Mage Slave by R.K. Thorne
  • Her Final Breath by Robert Dugoni
  • Memory in Death by J.D. Robb
  • Reign of Madness by Kel Kade
  • Secondborn by Amy A. Bartol
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke
  • A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin
  • Eldest by Christopher Paolini
  • Red Sister by Mark Lawrence
  • The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

6. Fall is the perfect time for some storytelling by the fireside: share a book wherein somebody is telling a story.Cover - Champions of the Dragon by Michael James Ploof
This one may be a cheat, but I’m going with it. The story of the Champions of the Dragon is told by a narrator. The narrator counts as someone right? The story in this is told in a way that you will be laughing all throughout. If you are having a bad day, pick up this book, you won’t have to wait long to laugh.

There are 5 different towns, and a champion is chosen from each town. However, each of these champions is actually not a champion. They are people the towns want to get rid of for one reason or another, such as they will be the first wizard to fail from the elite wizard school, or they are an Ogre eating a town out of all their food. The champions themselves however don’t know this fact. They think they have been chosen to actually be champions and kill a dragon. But, the catch is on their journey to the dragon’s nest, they start developing skills, and learning things about themselves and they start becoming champions. It’s a hilarious, uplifting story, and is the first book in the Epic Fallacy series.

7. The nights are getting darker: share a dark, creepy read.Cover - Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1
I don’t really do creepy and scary, so the best you’re probably going to get from me is the manga Tokyo Ghoul. This follows a young boy who is attacked by a Ghoul. A Ghoul is someone who appears to be a normal human, but they aren’t. They need to eat human meat to survive. Literally. Normal human food makes them sick. Although, go figure, they can handle coffee. Coffee is the only human food that doesn’t make them sick. When the boy is attacked he is almost killed. The Ghoul is killed. At the hospital, the doctor uses some of the Ghoul’s organs to save the boy’s life. When he wakes up from the surgery, he is suddenly a Ghoul. Even though most of his organs are still human, the organs transplanted seem to have taken over in some way and he now has trouble eating human food. Now he must somehow fit into a society of Ghouls and learn to survive when people are out to eliminate the Ghouls.

8. The days are getting colder: name a short, heartwarming read that could warm up somebody’s cold and rainy day.Cover - The Fire Within by Chris D'Lacey
Technically this is middle-grade, but it’s worth the read. This story teaches you to believe the unbelievable. Dragons are real, and they are here to help us. 😉

9. Fall (luckily, it’s my favourite season) returns every year: name an old favourite that you’d like to return to soon.Cover - The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen is probably the first book I’ve gone ballistic over and didn’t almost immediately read 2 more times after finishing. This was likely due to the fact I had checked it out from my library, and of course waited until it was basically due back to listen to it. I do now own the paperbacks of this trilogy, and I would love to get back to it.The False Prince is about a small group of boys chosen by a nobleman of the court to play at being the lost prince. The King, Queen, and Crowned Prince have been murdered. He is looking to take charge of the kingdom, the only way he would be able to. There is a hitch thrown into his plan though, and I can’t tell you what it is because it would be a spoiler. This hitch, when it was confirmed in the story, I got so antsy I got up and started pacing my house. Thank goodness I was listening to the audiobook and not reading a physical or ebook copy.

10. Fall is the perfect time for cozy reading nights: share your favourite cozy reading “accessories”!
reading with comforts
My comforts are few. I usually just need the book, a place to sit, and background noise. I can’t explain, but total silence creeps me out. There must be an acceptable amount of noise going on.

Usually I’ll be wearing my sweater, with a blanket on my legs. For some reason I’m always cold. My husband teases I could be in a volcano and still complain about how cold I am. I may grab something to drink in either my tumbler or mug. If you give me a choice of coffee or tea, I’m going with tea. But in actuality, I usually grab a soda drink. Jolly Ranchers are also a nice snack if needed. They are fruity goodness, and last a while before you need to grab more. So I’m not constantly reaching in and out of a bag.
